‘Star Trek’ has always been grounded in diversity

The 38-year-old Los Angeles native has three Oscar-nominated dramas to his credit — “Babel,” “Capote” and “Traffic” – and now tackles the action sci-fi genre.

The grandson of Mexican character actor Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, Collins tells reporters that one of the most challenging aspects of his “Star Trek” role was the long hours spent in the makeup chair. Apparently, the time was well spent.

“When I saw myself for the first time, it was pretty frightening,” Collins says during a recent “Star Trek” media day. “I looked in the mirror and I was like, “Wow, this is scary.’”
